New Patient: FAQs
-
Most dental professionals recommend being seen for preventative care twice per year. Your teeth are being used all day every day, and therefore, are subject to some wear and tear. By seeing the dentist for routine visits, conditions such as a cavity or broken filling can be addressed when they are still a small problem to fix. Waiting until something bothers you often results in treatment that is much more invasive (and usually more expensive). We even have many patients with certain health conditions, or some who are avid coffee drinkers, who benefit from having cleanings performed more frequently.
-
The easiest way to schedule an appointment is to just give us a call! We also have a form on this website to submit if you prefer. We are open later hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays in order to accommodate our patients who need to be seen outside of regular business hours.
-
As a new patient, you can expect a very thorough examination. We will begin by reviewing your medical history as well as discussing any specific dental concerns you may have. We will then obtain a series of digital radiographs to help evaluate your teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures. We may take photos to help educate our patients and help create an ideal treatment plan. Our dentists will perform a full exam, discuss any conditions seen, and review any recommendations. Often, patients will also receive a cleaning with one of our hygienists.

Of course! Both children and seniors are welcome at our practice. We pay extra special attention to accommodate the needs of both and take pride in doing so.

Kirkwood Family Dental is considered out of network with most private insurance companies, but that does not mean we don’t accept insurance. We will bill your insurance and file all necessary paperwork on your behalf. Most plans still allow you to use your benefits at our office, and we have dedicated team members who will help you maximize your coverage. By being out of network, our dentists are not bound by contracts that can become a hindrance to delivering the best care for our patients.

Emergencies can happen, and we are here to help. Thanks to our support and teamwork, we are often able to see an emergency patient quite quickly. If you happen to experience a dental emergency outside of our business hours, there is an emergency phone number on our voicemail that will put you in touch with our doctor. Someone is always a phone call away.

There is no substitute for daily brushing and flossing. Plaque and bacteria accumulate throughout the day and must be removed frequently to maintain a healthy mouth. We recommend electric toothbrushes to many of our patients due to their ability to clean much more thoroughly than a manual toothbrush. Certain mouthwashes can be helpful for those patients with a dry mouth. A water pick is also useful for patients with braces, bridges, implants, or spaces between their teeth. And make sure your toothpaste has fluoride in it in order to keep your teeth as strong as possible!

One of the easiest ways to enhance your smile is to brighten your teeth. Kirkwood Family Dental offers options to whiten your teeth either in our office or at home. Our dentists are happy to discuss the process and offer this treatment to many patients.

At Kirkwood Family Dental, our dentists are especially dedicated to continuing education and becoming experienced using the best technology. First, we use digital radiographs, or x-rays, for all our imaging. This allows for a much lower radiation dose compared to previous film styles, and we are able to acquire detailed images very quickly. We also use a scanner that takes the place of goopy impressions. The scanner provides a much more comfortable and accurate way to create a model of your mouth. Our hygienists use ultrasonic instruments to clean teeth. These instruments work by using vibration and water to quickly remove surface stains and build-up, reducing the amount of hand scaling needed. We utilize a laser to help treat lesions such as canker sores, and even to shape gum tissue during cosmetic treatments. Our dentists always carefully select specific materials for each restoration to ensure that we provide the highest quality and most natural looking smile.
